3 Things You Need to Know About Wind Damage to Your Home

Many homeowners do not understand how much damage the wind can cause to their homes. High winds can not only lead to fallen branches, uprooted trees, and even downed power lines—which can all be hazards to your property and the surrounding areas—but they can also directly cause structural damage to your home, especially your home by loosening shingles and causing them to fall off.

How To Tell If You Have Wind Damage to Your Roof

The type of roof and materials, as well as the power and range of the winds, impact how much your roof can be damaged. If you notice any gray, brown, or yellow water spots, damp ceilings or rafters, or cracking or peeling wallpaper, it is possible your roof may be compromised by wind damage or other related issues.

Here’s what you can do to protect your home:

  • Protect Your Roof – The best safeguard is to conduct routine roof inspections. You can inspect the roof yourself by walking a short distance from your home and using a pair of binoculars to locate any loose or missing shingles or tiles. If you find any, contact a contractor to make repairs or replace anything that is broken or damaged. You can also check areas where wiring enters your roof from the attic. If you notice any light shining through due to a roof leak, you must seal those areas. Lastly, inspect your downspouts and gutters and ensure they are firmly attached to your house and clear of any debris.

  • Conduct a siding inspection – If you notice any deterioration on your siding, make the necessary repairs or replacements. If you see any loose siding, you must reattach it. Reseal any siding around doors and windows, vents, wires, and water lines.

  • All outside items must be removed or secured – When strong and gusty winds are approaching, any outdoor items such as grills, furniture, and toys can become projectiles and cause damage to your home.

Homeowners Insurance Cover Wind Damage to Roofs

Most homeowners' insurance policies cover wind damage to the roof, but be sure to check yours just in case. If winds cause any damage to a free-standing garage or shed, these structures may be protected if you have other structures coverage.

Your policy should detail how your roof will be covered in the event of wind damage. Keep in mind, the age of your roof and lack of maintenance may also be factored into how much of the costs will be covered to repair or replace the roof. Your insurer will examine the damage and figure out a fair reimbursement.
